The only 4th liner we had last year was Matt Martin. Zeeker and Cal are about to be moved up to where they should be. Hell I could even see Cal as a regular 20 goal a year man with second line ice time. Cal for sure has the best shot on this team. Zeeker is your all round guy. He showed he could score in junior and he has showed he can score in the NHL. Just not very much in the NHL but that is because of his role. Given a different role I could see Casey's goal totals rise significantly. Nothing great but good enough to be a third liner for sure.

I like Matt Martin and he has been a great foot soldier for us. But for some odd reason it just doesn't bother me if the Isles lose him because of money. It happens and my heart is not tied to him. As good as our so called 4th line was last year I think we will be a better off team for having that line broken up.

Mark was calling for them to get PP time and I think they did see a little towards the end of the year. Point is, for Capuano not to realize that these players deserved a bigger role when so many forwards where struggling is a testament to his poor coaching abilities. Clutter is sound defensively, can bury his chances, and knock the snot out of somebody when he has to. Why was he never given time with JT? To me, it seemed like Bailey was rapped between every player that Jack tried on the top line.

I feel like they were really our 3rd line. We don't have a second line (except KO). And except for JT -no first line. Major upgrade time Messers. Ledecky and Wang , er i mean Malkin

Yeah, the 4th line was our 3rd line. The "best 4th line in hockey" thing was crap. They got 3rd line minutes and 3rd line money, they get compared to other 3rd lines. Since Cizikas was already getting essentially 3rd line ice-time, I wouldn't expect his numbers to go up much, if at all. Snow overpaid, period.

Assuming he and Clutterbuck are still together, what their numbers are depends on who they play with. They could go up if it is someone more offensive minded.

Yeah, but I don't see THAT good an offensive player being on the 3rd line. Safe bet is Kulemin or Bailey, so basically the same numbers as last year.

If we added someone like Hall or better next to Tavares, I would give Clutterbuck a look on the other wing.

It is very hard to predict lines at this point. It well be a lot of fun to guess in about 10 days when we will have a much better idea what the team is going to look like.

With the expansion draft coming up, this contract, and the way Snow structured it, could be the difference between keeping Cizikas, or losing him.

Plus, he bought 3 years of unrestricted free agency, and that always costs.

It's more money than any of us expected him to get.

iI'm waiting to see how the roster looks before I pass final judgment on the contract.

Look at it this way. Is Cizikas worth 50 grand more annually more than Josh Bailey?

If we can lose Okposo and Nielsen, we can lose Cizikas. In a cap world, 4th liners, complimentary players in general, have to be fluid. You don;t over-commit to them as Snow did with Bailey and Cizikas.

We haven't lost Nielsen yet, and I don't view Cizikas as a 4th liner. If you try to replace him on the UFA market, it will most likely cost a LOT more than what he got.

I would take our "overpayments," over most other team's such contracts. Take a look around the league and see how many truly horrid contracts are out there, especially on contending teams.

Yet those teams are contending while the Isles are in the upper 3rd of salary and just barely making it out of the 1st round. Those teams with horrid contracts still find ways to improve and add players.

Guys like Cizikas and Bailey can be replaced by the Quines and Princes of the world, then money and trade chips go toward more impact types.

I like Cizikas, but he isn't a core guy you lock up longterm.

We ARE a contending team though. Making it to the 2nd rd was part of the process. There were PLENTY of teams who have worse contracts and didn't even make the playoffs. It's all relative. I don't have a link handy, but a saw a stat somewhere that showed us consistently out-performing our payroll.

I would say Clutter is a nice movable piece. Nice to have these kind of guys on the team. I think Clutter can pretty much play whatever style you want him to play.
