Rumblings: Coyotes very likely to move

The Arizona Coyotes will very likely move ... down the highway.

One of the interesting consequences of the City of Glendale choosing to end its 15-year arena management lease agreement with the NHL club is that it sparked conversations and opportunities elsewhere in the Valley for a new arena.

Phoenix mayor Greg Stanton has been vocal in the local media in wanting to build a new downtown arena with the NBA’s Phoenix Suns to keep the Coyotes in town...

Building a rink way out in Glendale was always a bad idea, everyone knows that, given that most of the Coyotes' fan base and the deeper pockets in the area reside in Scottsdale and Phoenix.

The hope is that something gets finalized and announced this year with the team moving in three or four years.

I think it would be great for them to wind up back in downtown Phoenix.

I vaguely remember reading something way back then, questioning the wisdom of moving out to Glendale, but I'm not familiar with the area at all.

I guess they just figured it would be worth it to have their own building, mainly funded by the local government. Seems like they may just get the chance to rectify that mistake. I hope they do.

I think Glendale was totally away from the population center. That was the problem. But like you I am not familiar with the geography there.

The lease with Glendale called for the city to pay the Coyotes 15 million a year for 15 years (225 million) and also left the city responsible for any improvements to the arena. The Coyotes couldn't generate the revenue for the city to make money and at the time of the agreement, the city was struggling with debt problems. I'm happy that the tax payers of Glendale got out of a bad, one sided deal, just as I was happy when the Penguins got out from under the 2nd worst lease in sports (you know who had the worst) a few years back. What bothers me is nobody cared while the Islanders where stuck playing in the worst arena in the NHL under the worst lease in professional sports for 30 years. http://www.fiveforhowling.com/2013/6...ease-agreement

Jarred Tinordi suspended 20 games for drug violation

'I did not knowingly take a banned substance,' defenceman says

Arizona Coyotes defenceman Jarred Tinordi has been suspended 20 games without pay for violating the terms of the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program.
No one ever admits they did it on purpose.

              Maloney has been fired.

I still think this guy may have been a worse GM for us than even Mad Mike.

Interesting read on him here, and it reinforces my dislike of him. I think Maloney is the anti-Snow. Snow gets crap from the media, even though it's obvious he's got a methodology he adheres to.

Maloney has basically been faking it his whole career, but he talks a lot and has his dirtbag Rag$ brother and others out there propagating the myth that he's competent.

By all accounts, he gets lucky to stumble upon a top notch coach, and rode him, and hot goaltending to the playoffs a couple times, and he even manages to blow that relationship.

Don Maloney’s management style led to his downfall

If this essentially ends up being much like how Disney World started, I don't think it will impact too negatively on the local budget numbers. Disney basically created a local government entity and infrastructure where no one lived at least up until they built Celebration, FL. It will allow them to generate tax revenue without impacting things like schools and emergency services unlike most other arena deals.

Good move. After all he's been through and done for that team over the years, including a very productive season last year, he deserves this.
