Penguins acquire Trevor Daley from Blackhawks for Rob Scuderi

The winds of change continue to blow in Pittsburgh. Over the past week, the Penguins have said goodbye to the retiring Pascal Dupuis and fired head coach Mike Johnston. On Monday night, they traded defenseman Rob Scuderi to the Chicago Blackhawks for defenseman Trevor Daley.
Scuderi, 36, ends his second stint with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He started his career in the organization, was an integral part of their Stanley Cup run in 2009 and left for the L.A. Kings as a free agent the ensuing off-season. He was part of the Kings’ Stanley Cup victory in 2012 and returned to the Penguins for the past two-and-a-half seasons.
Daley, 32, only played 29 games as a Hawk. He arrived in the summer from the Dallas Stars as part of the Patrick Kane blockbuster. Daley exploded for 16 goals last year but had none so far this season with the Hawks, with just six assists. He carries a $3.3-million cap hit for one more season after this one.

Day To Day Status For Sidney Crosby
“Sid has a lower body injury. Right now his status is day to day. We’ll see how he is tomorrow,” said Sullivan.
He said he believes the injury occurred in the third period of the team’s 2-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes last night.

Matt Cullen Signs One-Year Deal With Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed center Matt Cullen to a one-year, $1 million contract, the team announced Wednesday.

The deal was a long time coming for the soon-to-be 40-year-old. He had said early in the offseason that he’d love to return to the club, while others like the Minnesota Wild were rumored to have interest. The new deal is a slight raise over the $800,000 deal he played under last year when he centered the team’s fourth line to a Stanley Cup championship.

                      Inside look at Pittsburgh Penguins

Defending Cup champs bring back familiar cast in bid to repeat

After going through a roster rebuild that spanned the better part of two seasons and helped them win the Stanley Cup last season, the Pittsburgh Penguins like their chances to repeat as champions.
"I certainly am not anxious to make changes right now," said general manager Jim Rutherford, who signed a contract extenion this offseason that runs through 2018-19. "If we have to make any adjustments, we'll do it in maybe December or January. Hopefully we don't have to make any."
After Lovejoy's departure, the return of Schultz preserves some stability along the blue line. Schultz, Kris Letang, Trevor Daley, Olli Maatta, Ian Cole and Brian Dumoulin likely will fill the six spots in Pittsburgh's dynamic defense.

Defenseman Derrick Pouliot, going into his third NHL season, could earn regular playing time with a strong training camp. If so, the 22-year-old has the talent to possibly fit into one of Pittsburgh's three pairs sometime during the season.
In my obviously anti-Penguin biased opinion I am not sure that the D is good enough over the long haul of a season. As a team they got red hot at the right time last year. Can they keep it up?

                            Sidney Crosby diagnosed with concussion

Penguins star's status for season opener uncertain

The Pittsburgh Penguins say superstar Sidney Crosby has been diagnosed with a concussion.

General manager Jim Rutherford made the announcement Monday.

The Penguins say Crosby sat out a pre-season game Saturday against Columbus because he wasn't feeling well and missed practice Monday to undergo concussion testing. They added that Crosby's status will be updated when more information becomes available.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie PIT coach Mike Sullivan said they would prefer to keep in house what specifically in Fri's practice may have led to Crosby's concussion.

I don't want to see the Princess hurt. I'd rather beat him on the ice than off it. Sooner or later the concussion's are going to catch up to him and force him out, IMO.

Wonder what happened? From the way Sullivan is talking Crosby could have taken a hard hit in practice or could this have been something that happened during the World Cup and the symptoms have come out now? Either way its a tough break because you don't want to see something like this happen to any player.
