AP: NHL settles on Las Vegas for expansion

The NHL is ready to roll the dice on Las Vegas.

A person with direct knowledge of the NHL's decision says the league has settled on Las Vegas as its choice for expansion, provided organizers can come up with a $500 million fee.

The person spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because details have not been released by the league ahead of its Board of Governors meeting on June 22 in Las Vegas. Quebec City was also considered for expansion.

A second person who had been briefed on the decision said Las Vegas was a "done deal" following the recommendation of the NHL's executive committee.

The 2017-18 season would be the earliest the league would expand.

The franchise would be the NHL's 31st team and the first major professional sports franchise in Las Vegas, the rapidly growing gambling centre of the American West.

500 mil for Las Vegas. RU kidding me??? Umm, take a look at the league's other team in the desert, Phoenix.

You gonna pay 500 million for that kind of financial hardship?

    PT Barnum was so right.....

Well this should be interesting for sure. First big league to enter and I'm sure there will be more to follow now. They have all been trying to get in to this market but just didn't want to be the first to do it. It would seem pretty obvious Quebec is set up for a relocation. I would guess Seattle will be the next expansion team.

This solves a lot of problems for the NHL. With a relocation to Quebec will strengthen the NHL from what ever weak city it gets a team from. More than likely Phoenix. Plus it doesn't put the owners in a massive hole because of the weak dollar and the high price of expansion fee. The NHL gets 3 markets they wanted to get in too and finally have an even league again with the same amount of teams in each division.

I would guess Mr Bettman is feeling pretty good about himself right about now.

Hearing the team name will likely be the "Knights". Owner Bill Foley is the chairman of Black Knight Financial.

Las Vegas’ T-Mobile arena looks ready to go in time-lapse video

Las Vegas has its expansion team, its GM in George McPhee, an assistant GM in Kelly McCrimmon and the makings of a brand new staff that is set to help the team hit the ground running come the 2017-18 season. That’s not to mention a brand new, state-of-the-art arena located just minutes from the world-famous Las Vegas Strip.

In the time leading up to the T-Mobile Arena hosting the inaugural game for the Las Vegas NHL franchise, the building is slated to be the site for a number of events, from UFC 202 to the 2016 iHeartRadio music festival, which will feature acts such as U2, Drake, Florida Georgia Line and Billy Idol. But once those events are over, and even before the Las Vegas team hits the ice, the arena is set to host NHL action this coming season.

The Los Angeles Kings’ Frozen Fury exhibition series will head to the T-Mobile Arena in early October, and well ahead of the pre-season series of games, the arena laid its ice for the very first time. Check it out in this new time-lapse video:

Report: Las Vegas’ AHL affiliate to be decided by late-December

The Las Vegas franchise has been steadily introducing members of its front office, continues to push towards a name, logo and jersey design and is no doubt keeping its eye on players as they look to build for the 2017-18 campaign.

But one other important piece of business is in line to be taken care of by the time the calendar flips over to 2018, says senior vice president Murray Craven: the AHL affiliation for the NHL club.

According to SinBin’s Ken Boehlke, Craven said the expectation is the team will know where it will be placing it’s AHL affiliate — a team it appears Bill Foley is planning to own in addition to the NHL club — by December 2016.
The potential locations that Foley was looking at for the AHL expansion franchise, according to Carp, were Salt Lake City, Fresno and Reno, all of which would likely mean the club would be added to the AHL’s one-year-old Pacific Division. The practice of putting the AHL affiliate closer to the NHL team has grown over the past several seasons, and Foley said convenience was a consideration. Andrews agreed.
"There’s unfinished business," coach Barry Trotz said.

Report: Las Vegas franchise could be named ‘Desert Knights’

Speculation continues about the potential names for the NHL’s Las Vegas franchise, with names such as Black Knights, Night Hawks, Desert Hawks and Red Hawks among the monikers which have been considered by the team.

But a new frontrunner may have emerged and it combines the Knights name with one of the Hawks-suffixed options.
