Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie Hearing lots of Dion Phaneuf trade chatter. Starting to think he could actually be dealt before the deadline.
It's McKenzie so it's worth paying attention to. Who would take on that salary? I would imagine Toronto would have to retain a whole lot of salary to trade him.

Well that didn't take long. And no salary retained.

      https://twitter.com/Senators/status/697091081939390464

Ottawa Senators @Senators #Sens get Phaneuf, Frattin, Bailey, Rupert and Donaghey in exchange for Cowen, Greening, Michalek, Lindberg and 2nd-rounder in 2017.
      https://twitter.com/Senators/status/697091412161142784

Ottawa Senators @Senators One additional note: no salary will be retained by either team over the trade’s entirety.

Bottom line from Dreger. Sounds like they basically gave him away for a 2nd round pick to clear the salary.

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger So, it appears Tor cleared out contracts and traded Phaneuf for a 2nd round pick.

Pretty comprehensive and coherent breakdown of the trade, albeit from the Leafs point of view.

Leafs trade Dion Phaneuf to Senators in nine-player blockbuster. Let’s sort through it
Whoa. Whoa. A nine-player trade? Between two teams historically characterized as bitter divisional and geographical rivals? Involving one of the team’s captains? Let’s breathe and try to sort through the blockbuster between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators.
Credit to Bob McKenzie for being first on the story. The official trade:
              Toronto Maple Leafs receive…
              Jared Cowen, D
              Milan Michalek, LW
              Colin Greening, LW
              Tobias Lindberg, RW
              2017 second-round pick
              Ottawa Senators receive…
              Dion Phaneuf, D
              Matt Frattin, RW
              Casey Bailey, C/RW
              Ryan Rupert, C
              Cody Donaghey, D
Before we dive into the specifics of each piece, let’s get to the point and examine what this trade is really about.

I'm kind of hoping the Leafts do get Stammer. Take as much of the Cap as you can Steven. Leave nothing for JT

                        I didn't see anything, I'd give him a pass.

The object is to win. Not just to compete, but to win.

Meh, McDonogh was not even consussed.
